GENE STEWART & his band "The Country Rebels," of Rayville, Louisiana, were one of the more popular upbeat country bands in Northeast Louisiana from the early 70s throughout the 80s.
Gene recorded several 45 rpm records during this period and was the first country artist to record the popular song, "Rub It In." It became a regional hit for Gene two years before Billy "Crash" Craddock recorded it and made it a national hit. Also a songwriter, Gene has recorded many of his own songs, i.e., "Face of an Angel," and "It's Not Much, But It's Home" (written about his hometown of Rayville, LA). Just recently Gene, very well known throughout the Ark-La-Tex as "The Country Rebel," began making select guest appearances with other groups in the tri-state region. He has also been retained for private functions and solo public performances. Gene has sung on the Liberty Opry, Liberty, TX and the Louisiana Hayride at the Municipal Auditorium, Shreveport, LA in this past year. Gene retired as Postmaster of Rayville, La (71269) in January 2003 after a public service career of spanning three decades.
